Shared leadership in practice: case studies
There at least 20 leaders working as co-heads in the UK right now. While the concept of shared leadership seems new, schools are increasingly adopting flexible working practices to retain and promote talented, ambitious staff and co-headship is part of a wider culture change in education.
Case study 1:
Lisa Farmer, Co-Headteacher, Thomas Russell Infants School, Staffordshire
Background
Sole head for 4 years, achieved outstanding Ofsted and gave birth two two boys during this time.
Motivation
“To be a mum at home as well as a headteacher”
“Wanted to share vision with a likeminded professional"
Choosing a co-head to work with
First got in touch with local authority and unions to discuss existing shared leadership roles within and without education
Applications: “interviewed 4 women (no men applied). Lisa was interviewed alongside candidates in an activity which allowed governors to see interactions and evolution of relationship through the day. 3 of the interviewees had small children and wanted the work life balance I was after.”
Overall experience of shared leadership
“We honestly don’t see any negative challenges, it is more about a way of working now. As long as we are well planned, share the key school events and ensure ALL our stakeholders understand and see in action that we BOTH have the same shared vision for the school and our pupils we can’t see any difficulties.”
“It is working very well for our school. We are relentless in our vision and approach, our staff, children and parents are very happy and that makes us happy… the school developed and improved as aa result of having 2 minds, experiences and styles.”
