4. How is appraisal structured?

Usually, the co-headteachers share appraisal targets especially data driven targets. Each headteacher is appraised separately in relation to these targets. However, each headteacher may have a separate professional development target.

5. What do you do if one leader takes parental leave?

Managing parental leave for a co-headteacher should be simpler than for a single headteacher.

Instead of a new leader having to step into the shoes of an absent headteacher, the second co-head remains in place ensuring continuity; a senior leader, either internal or external, can be appointed to cover parental leave as the second co-headteacher.

In the unlikely event that both co-headteachers take parental leave at the same time, the process is identical to what it would be if there were a single headteacher in place: a maternity/paternity cover headteacher is appointed.

6. What do you do if one leader takes long-term sick leave?

Managing sick leave for a co-headteacher should be simpler than for a single headteacher. The second co-head remains in place ensuring continuity; a deputy head can support the co-
headteacher, as they would in the case of a single co-headteacher taking long-term sick leave.
